High mintage issue is fairly common across all grades through MS 65. The dies were run a long time to produce so many coins, with the result that most survivors display worn, pebbly fields having indifferent luster. Poorly struck pieces are likewise the norm.. Several repunched date varieties are known for 1901 nickels, all of them quite minor. Of more interest is the fact that two different hubs were employed to make reverse dies for this date. The old hub is illustrated here, while the new hub has the leaf tip above the left side of the V noticeably closer. There presently exists little interest in these transitional varieties, and it's not known which is the rarer, if either.
