This date represents the first meaningful coinage of quarter dollars at the Denver Mint since 1929. The demand for additional pieces in its service territory remained fairly low in 1934, accounting for this issue's modest mintage. Even so, Mint State survivors are only slightly scarce, with a fair number of gems certified. Worn pieces are quite common through the efforts of several generations of coin board and folder collectors. The U. S. Mint was still tinkering with this coin's design in 1934. Two different obverse hubs were employed that year to create dies for 1934-D quarters. The more common issue has the Medium Motto described in the entry for 1934(P). Slightly less common are pieces having the Heavy Motto. Further varieties are presented by both subtypes being found with either the Small D mintmark of 1917-34 or the Large D of 1934 and later. These several combinations prompted the creation of a correspondence club devoted to 1934 quarters in 1963, but it folded without fanfare several years later. There doesn't seem to be much interest in the four possible varieties today, though specialists will seek out all of them. (From NGC Explorer)
