For the common obverse of the Gold American Eagles, the United States government selected the Augustus Saint-Gaudens $20 gold coin design featuring a striding Liberty. That legendary design was in use on the double eagle from 1907 through 1933 and was a clear choice for the Gold Eagles upon their initial release in 1986. Meanwhile, the reverse of the Gold American Eagles features a now-classic design by Miley Tucker-Frost depicting a family of eagles around their nest. The design also incorporates the timeless national motto IN GOD WE TRUST.
